Zoetrope

Zoetrope.space was a body of work created under my Conflux Coldwell moniker in 2019, using appropriated video tape loops misremembered from my childhood. Inspired by the mesmerising dreamlike loops of the zoetrope, and other early motion toys and machines, these distorted re-animations feel like a hallucinatory trip back to some other time, murky glimpses and screen memories surfacing from the cycling mechanical noise. The music was released on Crooked Acres Records. The loops were created using Coub, a contemporary equivalent of the zoetrope, billed as the ultimate looping machine. These eerily re-scored fragments are part of a live performance work and are presented online here: www.zoetrope.space

  • "These tracks have an incantatory feel, as though Coldwell is using these old technologies to conjure something directly from the ether. While others working in Hauntology stand outside trying to draw the haunted house, Conflux Coldwell is inside carrying out an excorcism."
