ALL FIELDS
PHOTOGRAPHY SERIES
2015
“I remember when this was all fields” is something of a truism, one that often doesn’t bare out in the face of evidence, and is more of an idiom, a placeholder for the lack of memory of what came before, an acknowledgement of change rather than any real grasp of it. Memory is foggy and sometimes false/illusory/spectral - this is a dimension which sonic hauntology in music is often exploring; fictitious pasts (Ghost Box, Broadcast), futures of the past (Burial, Kode9), misremembered ideas, time as being broken and out-of-joint, non-linear, even nonsensical. In that sense the fact that the implied rural past of these urban spaces is actually fake, a temporal mirage, somehow adds to their hauntological nature. |
